Word of the week: Thursday = الخَميس (al-khamīs)

Found on: http://wordadayarabic.wordpress.com/2013/02/17/days-of-the-week/

With the following link you will hear how it is pronounced: http://watchmojo.com/video/id/3790/

This past week I have been focusing on learning the alphabet and the basic greetings. Although I do know how to say “Marhaba” “Kifak”/ “Kifik” I find it important to know how to pronounce it correctly with the Lebanese accent. For this I watched Hiida’s Lesson 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7iovf94e4uU

The way I am learning the alphabet (still at a very beginners level), is by constantly writing down the letters over and over again. I also pronounce them while I write them with the aid of this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=YgbqjQTQhMU

I am still not able to recite the alphabet but I believe by next week I will be able to do so. From my experience of learning French I strongly advise to keep up every week at least 30 min of practicing the alphabet or other learned words/phrases. With language you never stop learning, but when you stop practicing it will fade quickly.  Another thing I do is when I drive to school (traffic in Los Angeles will always give you the time), I try and recite what I learned, and if I am unsure of one I stop and make a mental note about it so I am not repeating the wrong word.

This weekend I am going to a Lebanese community Church with my Aunt. I cant wait to see what words she can teach me!

As for my weekly words, they are at random since every word at this point is new to me. Do you have a favorite word in Arabic?

See you next time habibi!

Don’t forget to include more of your feelings about what you did/learned/etc. This will make your diary a richer source of data for the diary study.
